The Athens Goalkeepers Academy delegation arrived in Madrid on Monday, April 13, as part of its 26th official educational trip abroad, which will run through Sunday, April 19.

The delegation consists of 16 goalkeepers. Ten are part of AGA’s regular training program, while two represent the affiliated Rizos Goalkeeper Academy (Kavala). A further four goalkeepers are participating from partner goalkeeper schools in Thebes, Samos, and Germany.

During the program, the athletes will train and attend educational seminars at the facilities of leading Spanish clubs, including Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, under the guidance of the clubs’ goalkeeper coaches.

The delegation is led by Christos Lamprou, Head of Athens Goalkeepers Academy.

The young goalkeepers, all under the age of 19, stood out through the evaluation process that took place during the Academy’s two most recent Camps:

• The 14th Goalkeeping Camp & Seminar, held in the summer of 2025, with guest coaches Manuel Amoroso, Head Goalkeeping Coach of Inter Academy, and Colin Stewart, coach and instructor of the Scottish Football Association

• The 5th Panhellenic Goalkeeping Camp & Coaches Seminar, which concluded a few days ago, with Josemi Rodriguez, Goalkeeping Coach of Rayo Vallecano, as the lead instructor.

The athletes, one of whom comes from Agrinio and the Agrinio Goalkeepers Academy, are accompanied by the Head of the Athens Goalkeepers Academy, Christos Lamprou.

According to the schedule, they will remain in Spain until Sunday (January 11), visiting the training centers of collaborating LaLiga clubs and their academies, where they will train, receive further education, and undergo additional evaluation at the highest professional level.

Beyond the pitch, this journey also offers the athletes a chance to immerse themselves in Spanish football culture and the values of international sporting exchange.

The team is accompanied by the Academy’s Head Coach, Mr. Christos Lamprou.

Madrid was the destination for Greece’s top Goalkeeper Academy from last Monday (9/9) until Sunday (15/9), when the young goalkeepers are scheduled to return to Greece.

During this time, the athletes had the opportunity to attend seminars and train at the sports facilities of Rayo Vallecano and Atlético Madrid, under the guidance of the goalkeeper coaches of both clubs.

The aim was for the goalkeepers from AGA and the collaborating GK Goalkeeper Academy, part of the Greek Goalkeeping Network, to get in touch with and become familiar with the Spanish training model.

At the same time, they had the chance to experience Spanish culture and gain unique experiences that help shape character, especially at younger ages.

From a competitive perspective, AGA’s Head, Mr. Christos Lamprou, received comprehensive feedback from the Spanish GK Coaches regarding the athletes’ level, in order to work with them in a targeted way over the coming months and ensure they are even more prepared for the next evaluation.

The purpose is for them to be trained at the training centers of LaLiga teams, gain specialized knowledge and unique experiences, as well as to get in touch with Spanish sports culture and beyond.

The goalkeepers were evaluated on Greek soil at the last two Camps of the Athens Goalkeepers Academy: the Summer Camp 2023 and the Christmas Camp 2023.

The young athletes will be at the training centers of clubs such as Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, where they will be further evaluated by the goalkeeping coaches.

The 14 goalkeepers come from Athens, Thessaloniki (The Goalkeeperabout Academy), Ilia (Goalkeeper School Academy), Pella, Nafpaktos, Lefkada, Alexandroupoli, Rhodes, as well as from Canada.

They are accompanied by the Head of the Athens Goalkeepers Academy, Christos Lamprou.

This marks a milestone in the history of the No1 Goalkeeping School in Greece (AGA), as it is its 20th trip abroad in the last 10 years!

Similar to the previous 19 visits of AGA to other countries in Europe, at the training centers of the biggest clubs, in collaboration with top goalkeeping coaches, this one in Genoa also has an educational character.

It continues the education and evaluation program conducted by the long-time GK Coach of Genoa, Luca De Pra, at the “3rd Panhellenic Goalkeeping Camp” of the Athens Goalkeepers Academy, in December 2023, in Athens.

Six of the goalkeepers from that Camp received an official invitation from the experienced Italian goalkeeper coach and the Serie A club, to spend a week at Genoa’s training center, to closely acquaint themselves with the team’s football philosophy and working methods, to get in touch with the Italian culture, and be further evaluated.

Regardless of the evaluation outcome, the participants will gain valuable knowledge and live a unique life experience, one that shapes an athlete’s perception and character.

The 6 athletes come from three different regions of Greece. Specifically, 2 of them reside in Attica and are trained daily by the Athens Goalkeepers Academy, another 2 come from Chania (GK Goalkeeper Academy), while the other 2 come from Achaia.

They are accompanied by the Head of the Athens Goalkeepers Academy, Christos Lamprou.

The kick-off took place with training and evaluation in The Hague by goalkeeper coaches from Excelsior and Den Haag. For Excelsior, the experienced GK Coach of the first team John Bos, who previously played in the Eredivisie for Sparta Rotterdam, was present, while for Den Haag the training programme was conducted by Thom van Vliet.

The second day we had a programme by Vitesse’s GK Coaches at the team’s training centre in Arnhem. This was the 2nd consecutive year that the Dutch club hosted our Academy.

Utrecht’s day was our 3rd on Dutch soil, as our athletes were trained by the club’s GK Coaches, at their training centre. One of AGA’s goalkeepers even did a program with Utrecht’s U15!

Of course, everyone was given a tour of the excellent facilities and listened to valuable advice from the coaches.

On the fourth day, the training and evaluation programme was supervised by Rene Stam, at the Aiselstein’s stadium.

He is AGA’s official partner in the Netherlands, he is goalkeeping coach of the Dutch national U17 team and has worked for 12 years at Ajax, among others!

The last day of the Athens Goalkeepers Academy’s presence in the Netherlands was fully educational!

After four days of hard training and evaluation from five different teams in the country, our Academy’s had a great tour at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The impressive Ajax stadium, the legendary trophy museum, the changing rooms and the pitch are an important part of the modern history of European football. We believe that it is important for our athletes to get a taste of this history and be inspired by legends such as Johan Krof, Edwin van der Sar and others.

Εven more, we believe it is important for them to be taught the philosophy of one of the top academies on the planet. Building the right athlete, after all, starts with building the right character.

In addition to the tour of the stadium, our athletes had the opportunity to walk around the centre of Amsterdam, before flying, on Monday (8/1), back to Greece.

Over the past nine years, starting in 2014, the AGA has made 15 trips in European countries to allow their goalkeepers to have tryouts for top clubs. Ιn these nine years, more than 250 goalkeepers have been in 5 different countries (Spain, UK, Italy, Portugal, Sweden) to be evaluated.

What is the process

The process includes three evaluation stages.

1st evaluation stage:

• It is held in Greece during the annual AGA Camps by the guest goalkeeper coach from abroad. We always ensure it is a top name.
• It takes place during the season: in Athens by the coaching staff of the Athens Goalkeepers Academy and in other cities by the coaching staff of the Member Academies of the Greek Goalkeeping Network (established by AGA). The οτηερ member Academies are GK Goalkeeper Academy (Chania), Rizos Goalkeeper Academy (Kavala), Goalkeeper School Academy (Ilia), and Argolida Goalkeepers School (Nafplio).

2nd evaluation stage:

• It takes place in the training centers of the clubs and concerns those goalkeepers who have been evaluated capable and ready for this challenge, during the 1st evaluation stage.

3rd evaluation stage:

• It takes place at the training center of the club that has selected a goalkeeper from the 2nd evaluation stage. AGA Agency handles the negotiations.

AGA is the only Goalkeeping Academy in Greece – probably one of the few private football Academies in our country at all – that has the “green light” from major clubs abroad to evaluate goalkeepers on their behalf and constantly takes them to their training centers.

In its 11 years of operation, Athens Goalkeepers Academy has consistently worked with the top goalkeeper coaches in Europe.

Which goalkeepers is it about?

The prospect of participating in AGA’s training trips abroad does not only concern goalkeepers who train regularly at our Academy or the member Academies of the Greek Goalkeeping Network (GGN). The opportunity is also given to all the other goalkeepers who consider themselves capable and ready for this step.

The effectiveness

The fact that more than 50 goalkeepers – out of more than 1,000 who have been trained by AGA in its ten years of operation – today have a professional career is important to us. However, it is not everything since our philosophy is to reach each athlete’s maximum potential, whether at a professional level or an amateur one.

The effectiveness of the AGA Training Methodology has been proven and recognized through the course of these goalkeepers regardless of level.

Two notable examples of goalkeepers who developed rapidly after being trained by the Athens Goalkeepers Academy are Dimitris Stamatakis and Serafim Koulis.

As several other goalkeepers stood out in Camps or training trips of the AGA, their most characteristic common element is that these athletes in recent years, before their transfers, did not compete in any team or any league but were trained by our Academy!
